What Is Global Studies?
Global studies is an emerging and interdisciplinary field of study that examines the processes and effects of globalization from multiple perspectives. It encompasses various disciplines such as political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, history, geography, environmental studies, cultural studies, and more. It also incorporates cross-cutting themes such as human rights, democracy, development, security, health, culture, identity, and diversity.
At Buffalo State, Global Studies is a campus-wide institute that involves all three schools, the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, and the School of the Professions, as well as centers and programs that examine themes, processes and effects of globalization from social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental aspects.

This equipment costs approximately $1,000. It will not just serve the needs of the GSI itself, but other Buffalo State departments as needed. Your support allows us to build connections with existing programs on campus—another important part of our mission.

Simulcast Film Screening and Discussion
October 1, 6:00 p.m.
Bulger Communication Center 423
The Global Studies Institute, SUNY/CUNY SEAC, and GETSEA, in conjunction with the Justice in Southeast Asia Lab (JSEALab), is offering a very timely documentary film on Thailand called Breaking the Cycle, directed by Aekaphong Saransate and Thanakrit Duangmaneeporn. The film tracks the rise and fall of Thailand’s Freedom Forward Party and the political movement to restrain the Thai military’s power in 2018, before the party was dissolved by the Constitutional Court in 2020. The de facto successor party to the movement was again dissolved by the Constitutional Court earlier this month. The film has been a hit in Thailand and at film festivals since its release in May and offers an amazing insight into the history of military rule in Thailand.
This is a simulcast event at over 20 universities across North America including Cornell, Yale, and Harvard.
